November 16, 2011 LOS ANGELES, CA – Sundance Cinemas, the motion picture theatre circuit opening their newest film center at Bayou Place, is pleased to announce the opening film slate for November 23, and exciting news about the 2012 Houston Cinema Arts Society film festival.
"We are excited to join Sundance Cinemas in a new era for film exhibition in Houston and look forward to a great partnership for the 2012 Festival, November 7 - 11", said Trish Rigdon, Executive Director of the Houston Cinema Arts Society.
This news was delivered by Robert Redford, via a special film produced on the set of his latest film, THE COMPANY YOU KEEP, played at the Celebration of the Motion Picture Arts event on November 21. “We always strive to be good neighbors, friends and supporters as we all share the same cooperative spirit,” said Sundance Group President Robert Redford. “We're proud to be affiliated with such a great group of local organizations that serve the arts and members of the community,” added Redford.
Texas Art & Film was invited by the new Sundance Cinema to preview the new theater which is only the third Sundance Cinema in the country. An off shoot of the famous film festival held in Park City Utah every January, the prestigious theater will bring host top quality films in the Houston area. It has 8 screens and will help with some of the aggravation Houstonians feel with the River Oaks theater. Previously the Angelika theater, Sundance is the only major theater in the downtown Houston area. It’s central location downtown at 510 Texas Street, will invigorate those in the downtown and surrounding area, and hopefully compel them to the cinema more often.
We were treated to many of the popular items on the bar including some fantastic carrot cake cookies and other specialty treats that will be allowed in the auditoriums. The new wood, carpet and furniture smell really suggests that everything was gutted and redone. The atmosphere and aesthetic of the interior is very much like an interior, what one would expect to see in upper class Park City ski lodge’s. Vintage leather sofa’s and armchairs are at nearly every theater entrance. Local art is also hung and displayed around the lobby, which will rotate from time to time.
For those who never attended the Angelika theater, Sundance Cinema’s is sticking with the validation policy. All parking is free after you purchase your ticket, they will validate your ticket. Now that Houston is the third largest city in America according to the latest census report, it is very fitting that we have one of the nicest theaters in the country. As of Wednesday Nov 23rd, the Sundance Cinema is open for business, and this couldn’t have happen at a better time with all the Oscar prone films hitting theaters.
