Post SAG/Globe nods, how things stand.
By: Dustin Chase
Certainly an exciting two back to back days, so many nominees. At this point The Artist is leading the back, it has the most overall nominations and support. It’s emergence as the front runner now will likely come back to bite it by the time the Oscar are actually handed out. The Artist, The Descendants and The Help will likely garner the bulk of the nominations for Oscar as their numbers at the Globe and SAG nominations were above everyone else.
There were some major contradictions between SAG and Globe this year which could spell bad trouble for certain nominees like Armie Hammer who received a SAG nomination from his peers, but nothing from the Hollywood Foreign Press. The Globes clearly nominate more performances because of their genre separation which allowed folks like Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Brenden Gleeson and Joseph Gordon Levitt to get some love even though none of those nominees will turn into Oscar nominations.
With SAG their inclusion of DiCaprio and Hammer for J Edgar show there is still support for that film within the industry. SAG nominated Nick Nolte for Warrior which slightly resurrects his chances or will at least encourage voters to see a performance they might have missed. The big surprise at SAG this year was Damian Bichir for A Better Life which has lots of support but likely not enough to go anywhere. SAG’s biggest tale this year was who it left out: Shailene Woodley for The Descendants, Albert Brooks for Drive, both are considered shoo-ins for Oscar nominations.
The Golden Globes are taken less seriously than the SAG’s because with the HFPA its more about a popularity contest and getting big names on the red carpet. So they like SAG ignored Vanessa Redgrave’s performance in Coriolanus. The Globes ignored Drive altogether except for Brooks. As usual The Globes had off choices like all the nominations for Ides of March which had up until this point been forgotten.
Reflecting it looks like Glenn Close will reclaim that 5th slot for best actress as Elizabeth Olsen isn’t showing up anywhere. Chastain’s performance from The Help has clearly been sanctioned as the most admired of her six, also showing there is enough love for that film that both Chastain and Spencer will make the cut. I am so thankful even the Globes ignored Spielberg as director, even though they did nominate War Horse for best picture drama. I was surprised to see Rooney Mara nominated at the Globes, that isn’t likely to transfer into anything more. In most of the comedy categories its easy to predict who will win: Dujardin/Williams, and The Artist will easily take Best Picture Comedy/Musical.
